In 1937 the theater was named after playwright Gabriel Sundukyan, and in 1960 it was awarded the title of academic theater. The current director of the theater is Armenian actor Vardan Mkrtchyan, the artistic director is theater director, RA honored artist Armen Elbakyan.

Over time, the theater has discovered a number of bright personalities. Vahram Papazyan, Hovhannes Abelyan, Hrachya Nersisyan, Gurgen Janibekyan, David Malyan, Sos Sargsyan, Azat Gasparyan, Varduhi Varderesyan and others created their creative path here. The rise of the theater was conditioned by many performances such as ''Hamlet'', ''My heart's in the highlands'', ''Mascarade'', ''The living corpse'', etc.

The theater has gathered the best Armenian theatrical figures living in different countries, in different cities of the world, and has become the center of the Armenian theatrical art due to decades of hard work and investments. To this day, the people call it "Mother Theater". This is the best formulation of the whole essence of the structure. Today's building of the theater, which is a unique architectural monument, is located in the heart of Yerevan, at Grigor Lusavorich 6.

In the interior of State Academic Theatre ''Felice'', ''Eiger'', ''Fuji'', ''Faraglioni’' collections of ceramic tiles and porcelain tile of Kerama Marazzi were used.

''Felice'' in Italian means "happiness". This "happy" collection of Kerama Marazzi decorates the interior of State Academic Theatre. The collection of Kerama Marazzi ''Fuji'' that was used in the interior of State Academic Theater is the best option for decorating public interiors in a minimalist style.
''Faraglioni’' the collection of porcelain tiles from Kerama Marazzi is for flooring in private and public interiors. With the help of the collection, it will not be difficult to create a durable and practical coating, which, moreover, will give aesthetic pleasure thanks to its thoughtful design.
